Usage notes
Very common in Spain as an exclamation of anger, surprise or admiration, and as a verb meaning "to ruin" or "to annoy". Its literal sense is a crude word for sex, which is why it is strongly vulgar. Recognise it in films, songs and street speech, but avoid it at work, with strangers or with older people. Milder alternatives: «caramba», «vaya», «madre mía», «fastidiar».
